Gitzo Tripods
Gitzo tripods are the best tripods money can buy. Now first thing first, if you are looking for an affordable, budget tripod, then look somewhere else. Gitzo tripods are expensive, very expensive. Indeed, you can expect to pay between 500 to 800 dollars for one of these tripods. This is a far cry from the cheap 20 dollar plastic tripods you may find in say Wall-Mart. But, there is a reason why these tripods are so expensive!
Picking out a tripod is not exactly an easy prospect. First, you need to identify your specify needs. The type of tripod you buy for the studio will be quite a bit different than the type of tripod you end up buying to go travelling with. For one, tripods that you won’t need to travel don’t need to be as light and when the legs are contracted, the tripod doesn’t have to be short. A travel tripod must be very light, very small, and very portable.

Gitzo tripods are famous because most of their tripods are constructed from Carbon Fiber. You can typically buy tripods in 4 different types of materials: plastic, aluminum, basalt, and carbon fiber. The cheapest tripods are made from plastic, but this material is really very poor. For one, plastic tripods are prone to breaking and the tripods don’t offer a lot of stability. Aluminum tripods are a nice compromise between stability and price, but they are actually quite heavy. You really don’t want to go backpacking or travelling with an aluminum tripod as you will likely be carrying anywhere from 6 to 12 pounds of extra weight on you. Basalt are a nice compromise between weight and price – they are better than aluminum tripods in terms of weight and stability, but also more expensive. Basalt tripods are also much cheaper than the top end material: carbon fiber.
Gitzo offers basalt and carbon fiber tripods. However, they are most well known for their line of carbon fiber tripods. Gitzo tripods are the best because the company is consistently offering new and innovative features on their tripods. For example, Gitzo carbon fiber tripods are constructed using the 6x manufacturing process they’ve pioneered. This basically means that their tripod legs are more rigid, lighter, and more stable than carbon fiber tripods manufactured without the 6x process. Many Gitzo tripods feature special Gravity locks. These are locks about the leg extensions that actually become more rigid when you add more weight to the tripod – i.e. the more weight that presses down on the tripod, the more rigid the join locks become. Some of the higher models include their new ALW technology – basically, you can loosen an entire tripod leg with a single twist. This is a big deal because it allows you extend your entire tripod in a couple seconds. With regular tripods, it can take your 20-30 seconds to loosen all the tripod leg extensions. Many Gitzo tripods have weight hook so you can add even more stability to the tripod.
My personal favourite is the
Gitzo 1541T series tripod which is the best travel tripod in the world, bar none. This tripod features all the Gitzo technology (6x Carbon Fiber, Gravity Locks, Weight Hooks, ALW, etc) but features a special folding design where the legs actually fold back over the tripod ballhead, making the tripod even shorter! The tripod is literally about 16-17 inches tall when the legs are contracted and the legs are folded backwards over the ballhead. It only weights about 2lbs too!
So if you are looking for the best tripods in the world, there is no better than the Gitzo Tripods.
